Best Cycling Climbs of the
Santa Monica Mountains
Living in the Conejo Valley, I am blessed with some of the best road biking and mountain biking found anywhere in the United States. Couple that with the fact that the weather basically allows for year round riding and it's a pretty hard place to beat.
Spending as much time as I have on a bike in the Santa Monica’s I decided to come up with a “top ten” list of my favorite road bike climbs. It is amazing what strange things you start to think about as you are riding by yourself mile after mile.
Well here you have my list of the ten best climbs in the Santa Monica Mountains (plus one honorable mention). Each ride contains:
Difficulty Rating: I have rated the climbs below from 1-hardest to 11-easiest. This rating is only intended to relate the climbs outlined here. If you want a general idea of what the ratings mean here you go:
- If it is rated #11 you will probably think, “That was not all that terrible.” But that is why they call it “7 Minute Hill” and that means you should be able to finish it in under 7 minutes if you want to talk crap to your friends. If you try to finish it in under 7 minutes it begins to feel a bit more like #1. OK, maybe #6 or 7.
- If it is rated #5 you probably will want someone to hit you over the head with a big rock by the time you get to the top. If you do #5 before #1 you will think to yourself, “There's no way in hell I am ever doing #1”. But eventually your curiosity will get the best of you and you will give it a go.
- If it is rated #1 you probably will want someone to slowly stab you to death with a very dull spoon. Sure it will be a slow and painful death, but the suffering you will encounter will be nothing to what you just experienced on the climb. Did I mention yet how much I like Deer Creek?
Distance: Overall distance in miles of the climb described.
Climb Rating: The Tour de France scale is used (4 – easiest to HC – Beyond Category)
Ride Specific Links: Links have recently been added for both Ride With GPS and Strava segments.
